'Bring, bring.'
I paused from my frantic scrubbing and grabbed my mobile off the bathroom bench. Holding the phone in between my ear and shoulder, I said, "Hello?"
"Hey, Amber, it's me."
I frowned as I rubbed the soap on the ring before dunking it in the sink-full of water. Who was 'me'?
"Er… Hi me," I said slowly, my brain whirring to try and figure out who it could be.
"You don't know who it is, do you?" the guy said and I heard a faint trail of disappointment laced beneath his words.
"Uh, sorry, no," I replied awkwardly.
"It's Lucas," he said shortly.
My eyes widened and I gave a silent wince. Of course! How could I forget his voice out of anyone's? But I guess my thoughts were elsewhere… not that I could tell him that without him asking where exactly they were.
"Hello?" Lucas said impatiently.
Oh shit, I thought, realizing I had delved in a distracted silence for the past few moments.
"Er, right, sorry," I said quickly. "My head's just… in the clouds."
"Yeah, that's OK," Lucas muttered, but I could tell it wasn't. "I was just calling to see if you wanted to do something this afternoon but it's sweet if you're too distracted or whatever."
I winced at his hurt tone. "No, I'd love to get together with you," I said. "Um… How about I meet you underneath the pier at the beach in forty-five minutes?"
"Sure. That sounds good."
Silence. I racked my brain for something conversational to say but my mind seemed to be wiped blank except for one topic: Tristan. And, well, I didn't really feel like explaining that thought to Lucas.
"Well, see you then," Lucas said finally.
"OK, bye," I said and I hung up, feeling extremely bad.
